Ezra 2:43-70

<Ezra 2:43-70> There are consequences for disobeying God

Todays passage was is a little difficult on its own,

and yet there are still some principles we can get out of it.

There are consequences for disobeying God

Even after forgiveness and faithfulness (믿음),

the consequences (결과) remain as scars (아픔.

I want to highlight one passage here. They lost their identity (정체성). Some literally lost their identity in the all important genealogy 족보 (v.62).

v.58 The following were those who came up from Tel-melah, Tel-harsha, Cherub, Addan, and Immer, though they could not prove their fathershouses or their descent, whether they belonged to Israel.

v.62 These sought their registration among those enrolled in the genealogies, but they were not found there, and so they were excluded from the priesthood as unclean.

Hebrews 12:6, For the Lord disciplines (훈련) the one he loves, and chastises (매질) every son whom he receives.

These days youre not supposed to hit, but in the past when you did, sometimes scars (상처) would remain. And the pain and the scars (상처) would remind you, and be a part of reminding you of the seriousness (심각함) of your mistake.

For these people, there was a lasting scar that reminded them of the seriousness (심각함) of their sin.

If you sin, though Gods grace is there, and forgiveness is real, consequences (결과) are also real. It is possible, if you continue in your sin, that you will build up Gods discipline (훈련). And when it unleashes, it will hurt. And it will be unpleasant.

       EX/ Jacob

       Did not have good character.

He cheated  his brother.

He lied to his dad. )

And this became a normal thing for him. And God dealt with him. He brought him into the presence of his uncle Laban. Laban began to cheat and lie to him for 20 years. This, I believe, was all a part of Gods disciplining of him. That is extreme consequence. He had to work 7 years for his Rachel, and ended up getting Leah. Then another 7 years for a total of 14 years. On his return home, Rachel got sick and died. Later, his sons lied to him about his favorite son Joseph. At one point, he cried out to God, All these things are against (저항한다) me.

But by the end, he had learned through circumstance and the discipline (훈련/매질) of the Lord. He was humble (겸손), gentle (부드러운), and mature (성숙). Even Pharaoh saw him as a man of God, and received a blessing (축복) from him.

But the consequences (결과) remained with him.

This is a warning (경고). Let it be a warning (경고) to us.

There are consequences for disobeying God

And at the end of the day, for our sin, for our disobedience, the biggest consequence is what? That Jesus had to die on the cross for it. He suffered and bled and died, and took the weight and punishment of Gods wrath for our sin. That is an enormous consequence.

What, just so we can be justified in our anger? Just so we can revel in our laziness? Just so we can gossip and be jealous? Just so we can be greedy? Just so we can sin?

Even when we are disobedient, God is faithful (신실함) to His own people. He will not forsake them.

We must remember this in the hard times. We must remember this in our guilt (죄책감), and suffering 고통, and despair 절망.

He can move huge groups of people

       50,000 people

       10,000 animals

moved in the heart of King Darius of Persia to do this

EX/ No matter what, Gods faithfulness will never fail. Even when we are faithless, He is faithful. There is no sin too big to stop Him from loving us and restoring us. In this world, we will see a glimpse, but in the world to come, we will see it in its entirety as God makes all things new.

What is our response to Gods faithfulness?

They gave freewill offerings ( 예물) (v.68)

Notice that it was some, not all

They valued the temple of God

Do we value the freedom we find in being His people forever?

For being the temple of God?

When we are thankful to Gods for His faithfulness, we give freewill offerings. It is freely given, and it is given lavishly. We give our lives to God. We give all that we have to God.

       Hebrews 12:7, 11
